Monday 8/20/07-Don't Let Them Sell The Dream For $1 And Turn It Into A Nightmare!!! Save The National Civil Rights Museum From Corporate Takeover!!!

"The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy."
--Dr. King from his "Strength to Love" speech (1963).

Brothers and Sisters:

The Tennessee Legislative Black Caucus is holding a Public Hearing THIS MONDAY, August 20th, at 6:00 PM at the AFSCME Union Hall, Martin Luther King Labor Center, at Fourth and Beale in Memphis. There are critical questions regarding the future of the National Civil Rights Museum where Dr. King ended his struggle. The Museum Board is dominated by corporate representatives, with less than a majority of its membership from the African American community.

There are critical questions on whether the State will sell the property to the Board for a dollar, and whether the new lease should go to a board more representative and engaged with the ongoing battles for economic and racial justice. The present Board is now involved in a process of changing the exhibits at the Museum and presenting their view of our civil rights challenges and history.

The members of the Legislative Black Caucus will play a decisive role in how these questions are answered and it is important that you, their constituents, attend the hearing and let them know what you think.
